Tools that I find effective

Greetings

I wanted to share two tech tools that I have found to be very helpful. The first is for PC and Mac.

It is called DropBox. Perfect for making sure that you have all the files you need in all the computers that you use. For example, when I save a file to the desktop that I use here at school, a copy gets saved to my work laptop, and my desktop at home. The best part is I don't have to email files to myself so that I can finish working on them from home, or worry about… Continue

Readability: A New Tech Resource

A great tech resource I just discovered is a web-browser tool called "readability". It strips away all non-text parts of a website and blows up the text into large font. This is perfect for when you want to project web page text for a class in a size that all students can see. It's just a button on your browser's bookmark toolbar, and can be turned on and off at will.

I've used it and trust me, you will really like this.…

Electronic Poetry Project

This is a fun project that adapts to all content areas. I have presented it at the Innovative Learning conferences and at FETC last year and will present it again at IMPACT II in February at NSU. The details are on docmelillo.wordpress.com under poetry project but this year the kids have used it for presenting the 35 vocabulary words most used on FCAT. Basically, it is taking a poem (from a particular poet or time period or an original) and create an electronic presentation using… Continue

A short testament for Collaboration

I’m starting a project next week with my 10th grade World History students, and I have been going back and forth about whether I should give this project to them or not. I am entitling it “What if?”, based on the current trend of writing of alternate history in historical research. The main issue I keep grappling with is the fact that it is going to be really intense, and my students are going to really have to read, study, analyze - and not to mention CREATE - to make this project not become a… Continue

A life-changing book for me was Victor Frankel's Man's Search for Meaning. I read it in high school and have revisited it many times since then. Lately, I have been reading adolescent literature because it's such a pleasure to…

I enjoy using School World. I really enjoy it even though I have to pay for it. They have a special price for Broward Co. teachers and you can have the upgraded "premium" site for the price of the regular site. Here's…

I agree Susan. I've read the "Art of Happiness" and have his sequel too...my wife is reading it now. Not many books are life-changing, but that one certainly is.
